The Maati Collection

A Journey Through Traditions

This piece is really close to me as it comes from my homeland. The soft and chilled breeze of the winter air mixed with the early morning bustling markets resonates through the earthy surface of these mugs. “মাটি”, not just a word for soil, it is the familiar feeling that exists in all of us. A sense of belonging and authenticity which is truly captured in the earthy and skillfully crafted cups.

Nestled in the heart of West Bengal, Shantiniketan is renowned for its vibrant artistic legacy and deep connection to nature. This village, founded by Rabindranath Tagore, embodies a philosophy that celebrates the harmony between art and life. The artisans of Daronda village, near Shantiniketan, are the heartbeat of Subko’s Ceramic Collection. Their hands mold the red earth into exquisite forms, echoing centuries of tradition while infusing each piece with their unique stories and experiences. These artisans—Bahadur Soren, Santoshi Mai, Purnima, and Sukal Soren—are not just creators; they are storytellers. Their craftsmanship is a lifelong devotion passed down through generations. Each vessel they shape carries whispers of their heritage, transforming an everyday coffee cup into a narrative of cultural significance. The packaging, titled “Earthen Expressions: Artisan Stories from Sienna,” amplifies this connection by sharing the lives and legacies behind each creation.

we live, love and breath in the same air and when the first rain hits the dry soil (মাটি), it reminds us of something we left behind. Something so close to us, something so familiar yet something that no longer exists in our lives.

Crafting Functionality with Elegance

For The “মাটি” collection Subko’s approach to design is an artful balance between beauty and practicality. Every ceramic piece is meticulously crafted to enhance the coffee-drinking experience. The cups are volumetrically designed to ensure precision in serving sizes—whether it’s an 8oz cappuccino or a 12oz latte—allowing baristas to pour with confidence and consistency. This attention to detail reflects a modern sensibility while honoring traditional techniques that require time and patience; each cup takes about 40 days to create. The collection also features delicate inlays of 24k gold along the rims, showcasing the linguistic diversity of South Asia. The word “Subko” is inscribed in 14 different Indic scripts, celebrating the myriad cultures that converge in this vibrant region. This decorative choice is not merely aesthetic; it boldly asserts that South Asian design can stand on its own terms—modern yet deeply rooted in its historical context.

At its heart, the Subko Ceramic Collection is more than just pottery; it celebrates West Bengal’s rich craft heritage while embracing modern design. It transforms the everyday act of enjoying coffee into a meaningful experience that honors tradition and welcomes contemporary style—a true testament to how thoughtful design can connect cultures and stories through the simple beauty of a cup.
